Function
- lysozymes have primarily a bacteriolytic function
- lysozymes in tissues & body fluids are associated with the monocyte-macrophage system
- lysozymes hydrolyze of (1->4)-beta-linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid & N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues in a peptidoglycan & between N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues in chitodextrins
- lysozyme C is capable of both hydrolysis & transglycosylation
- slight esterase activity
- acts rapidly on both peptide-substituted & unsubstituted peptidoglycan, & slowly on chitin oligosaccharides
Structure
- monomer
- belongs to the glycosyl hydrolase 22 family
Pathology
- defects in LYZ are a cause of amyloidosis type 8
