Introduction

Muscle extending from the pelvis into the gluteal region.

Origin

• margins of the pelvic sacral foramina & greater sciatic notch of ilium

Insertion

upper border of the greater trochanter (femur)

Action

rotates thigh laterally

Innervation

nerve to the piriformis (sciatic plexus)
