Introduction

Non-pathogenic intestinal flagellates, infrequently seen.

Laboratory

  • trophozoites
    • measure 4-10 um in length, generally 8-9 um
    • oval-shaped
    • jerking motility
    • one nucleus, generally not visible in unstained specimens
    • 2 anterior, 1 posterior flagella
    • one side of body flatted
  • cysts
    • measure 4-10 um in length, generally 6-8 um
    • elongated or oval
    • 1-4 nuclei, 2 at opposite ends of the cysts, not visible on unstained specimens
